Digital Burnout

Digital burnout counseling, online and in Hyderabad

With Simran Rani, Counseling Psychologist

Digital burnout isn't the same as being "bad with screen time." It is what happens when your nervous system never actually gets to switch off (notifications, comparison, the low hum of always being reachable), and it builds up quietly until one day you notice you are exhausted in a way sleep doesn't fix.

The work is less about quitting your phone and more about rebuilding the energy and focus that burnout quietly drains away. Sessions are online over Google Meet anywhere in India, or in person across Hyderabad.

What digital burnout often looks like

Not a diagnosis, just what I hear most often from people sitting across from me:

  • Picking up your phone and not remembering why
  • Feeling flat or irritable after time online, even when nothing "bad" happened
  • Comparing your life to a version of everyone else's that isn't real
  • Struggling to concentrate on anything that takes longer than a few minutes
  • Feeling wired and tired at the same time, especially at night

If a few of these sound familiar, that's not a character flaw. It is a predictable response to an environment that is demanding on your attention and self-esteem all day, every day.

How I work with digital burnout

"Just take a break from your phone" is true and also not very useful advice on its own. What we work on instead:

  • Naming the pattern instead of white-knuckling it. Burnout responds better to understanding why you reach for your phone (boredom? loneliness? avoidance?) than to willpower alone.
  • Rebuilding one offline anchor at a time, a walk, a meal, a conversation where your phone isn't in the room, rather than trying to overhaul everything at once.
  • Separating rest from scrolling. Scrolling feels like rest because it is passive, but it rarely leaves you actually recovered. Real rest is usually a little more boring than that.
  • Getting curious about comparison, rather than fighting it. Most digital burnout has a comparison thread running underneath it that is worth looking at, not just distracting from.

None of this is about quitting technology. It is about your relationship to it, which is very fixable, even if it doesn't feel that way right now.

Who this is for

Students, young adults and working professionals whose day runs through a screen: remote and hybrid work, always-reachable teams, and the social feeds that fill the gaps in between. I also see teens, with a parent or legal guardian involved. Anyone under 18 is booked and consented for by a parent or legal guardian; a friend cannot book for a minor.

When is it worth booking?

If digital burnout has started blending into something heavier (persistent low mood, anxiety that doesn't ease up, or a sense of disconnection from people you care about), that is usually a sign it has grown into something worth unpacking with support, not just habit changes. You don't need a diagnosis or a referral to send a request.

Common questions

What is digital burnout?

Digital burnout is the exhaustion that builds when your nervous system never gets to switch off: notifications, comparison, and always being reachable. It shows up as feeling wired and tired at the same time, trouble concentrating, and feeling flat after time online. Sleep alone usually doesn't fix it.

Do I have to give up my phone or social media?

No. The work is about your relationship to technology, not removing it. We usually start by understanding why you reach for the phone and by rebuilding one offline anchor at a time, rather than a full digital detox.

Can I do burnout counseling online?

Yes. Online sessions run over Google Meet and are available anywhere in India. In-person sessions are in private meeting rooms and quiet cafe lounges across Hyderabad.

How much does a first session cost?

The first session is ₹850 for a limited period (regular price ₹1,500), online or in person. Fees for later sessions are discussed with you directly before you commit to anything further.
